What about the thief on the cross?

  • (updated 10.2.25 @1PM)
The best way to answer this question is with another question:  When did the New Covenant in Christ take affect?
  • He had to die
  • He had to be buried
  • He had to conquer death and be resurrected
And one should contend as well that until the Holy Spirit was sent - no one could fulfill the terms of being born again (from above). Because until those things happened how could we enter the Kingdom of God - We couldn't.  Not to mention that Jesus was here for 40 days before He ascended to heaven to sit at the right hand of the Father.  And until He went, He could not send the Holy Spirit. (John 16:7) (John 7:39)

Why is this true?  Because that's what Scripture says.
So, why was the thief forgiven and going to be with Jesus? In Acts 17:30 NASB1995, Paul is speaking to the people in the Areopagus explaining the one true God and in his discourse he says this: “Therefore having overlooked the times of ignorance, God is now declaring to men that all people everywhere should repent,” The time of ignorance is right up until the New Covenant went into effect and after that then we see documentation of the Gospel of the Kingdom of God being preached.
So, the next question is: Where did the thief go?  Well, again we answer that with a question:  Where did Jesus go? In Luke 23:43 | NASB 1995, Jesus said, “…Truly I say to you, today you shall be with Me in Paradise.” So, Jesus said that today He would be in Paradise but WHERE was Paradise? How could Paradise be in the lower parts of the earth.  In Luke 16:22 we learn about Abraham’s bosom the place that separates the poor man from the rich man. We also learn from Scripture that Jesus was in the heart of the earth for three days so that means so was the thief but not in Sheol but Abrahams bosom which is what Jesus was making a reference to as being Paradise. How do you connect those dots?  (1) Jesus is in the heart of the earth (also called the lower parts) for three days (2) “Today” = day 1 of the three days (3) If it consist of Abrahams bosom the chasm and Sheol(H)/Hades(G) Then (4) the ONLY place of Paradise would be Abrahams bosom.  Jesus did not go to the Father UNTIL 40 days after His resurrection.
Lastly, what did Jesus do while He was there? He went and preached to the spirits now in prison and He led captive a host of captives.

I hope that this walk through “critical biblical thinking” has shown you that you cannot weigh the experience of the thief on the cross with what Jesus said was necessary for entrance into the Kingdom of God.
  • Luke 16:22 | NASB 1995, “Now the poor man died and was carried away by the angels to Abraham’s bosom; and the rich man also died and was buried.”
  • Matthew 12:40 |NASB 1995, “for just as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of the sea monster, so will the Son of Man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.
  • Ephesians 4:8-10 |NASB 1995, “Therefore it says, “When He ascended on high, He led captive a host of captives, And He gave gifts to men.” 9 (Now this expression, “He ascended,” what does it mean except that He also had descended into the lower parts of the earth? 10 He who descended is Himself also He who ascended far above all the heavens, so that He might fill all things.)
1 Peter 3:18-19 |  NASB 1995, “For Christ also died for sins once for all, the just for the unjust, so that He might bring us to God, having been put to death in the flesh, but made alive in the spirit; 19 in which also He went and made proclamation (preached) to the spirits now in prison,
MY MISSION
To lead and encourage others to recognize and pursue the knowledge of Truth. To provide discipleship, teaching and tools that will aid in producing believers that are of good character, whose lifestyle identifies them as true Christ followers.  Proof of growth will be believers that live lives with a purpose that reflects genuine spiritual maturity.

To introduce myself, my name is Cheryl.  It's always interesting to understand how or why someone ends up on a website - potentially with someone you've never actually met.  What I hope is that you will discover tools & resources that will not only disciple you, but enable you to disciple others.  You might ask, 'why is discipleship so important to you?' - and the answer would in short be - because of my journey.

I was introduced to Jesus at an early age.  I have experienced many different denominations in my life:  Methodist, Baptist, Foursquare, Mennonite, Assembly of God and Non-Denominational.  I am beyond grateful for that journey.  However, it wasn't until August of 2010 that I actually stopped running from God and intentionally and actively began pursuing a relationship with Him [the Holy & Victorious Tri-unity of Father, Son & Holy Spirit] and I have not waivered.  Truth be told, I wasn't discipled by any person but rather the Holy Spirit--and it has been an extraordinary journey.

There is some advice that I would like to offer to anyone who is being taught the Word of God:
  • First, look for the Statement of Belief.  You need to know where a person is coming from.  If you cannot find a Statement of Belief, contact them and if they cannot or will not provide one - RUN.
  • Second, anyone can write a Statement of Belief but IS IT BACKED UP BY SCRIPTURE?  Trust me, that's important!
  • Third, TEST EVERYTHING!  And yes, that is Scriptural.  One of the lessons that God taught me is that just because someone is teaching Biblically TODAY does not mean that they are TOMORROW.  One of the most dangerous assumptions is in thinking that you no longer have to make sure because "hey, they've been spot on so far".  It's easy to fall into that trap.  I'll be the first to exhort others to test me - I am human and I can make a mistake.
  • Fourth, anyone can call themselves a "Christian teacher" , a "Christian author", or whatever - but if their body of work is being toted as "Christian" or "Biblical" - then it should have Scripture in it (and not just some token representation) and even then, if it does have Scripture - you better have your Bible sitting right next to you - read it in context - read it in other translations.  There are many warnings in the Bible about False Teachers and False Prophets- pay attention.
  • Lastly, and this is just a personal observation based on the journey that God has taken me through, study multiple translations and don't get legalistic.  When you are reading a section of Scripture in 3 to 5 different translations your eyes begin to not gloss over something that maybe you have read many times and suddenly you are seeing with new eyes - when you are looking at different translations you also begin to see a difference in word choices and it should spur you to ask the question of "why did this one use this word and that one use that word?" and then it steers you to begin searching Hebrew & Greek meanings.  It's very transformative and powerful!
Well, I suppose it's time to let you explore - as you can see - I'm pretty passionate about this discipleship & study thing!  Love, [in] Christ,  Cheryl

PLEASE NOTE:  A full list of my studies have been taken down with the exceptions of LAUNCH and THE KINGDOM OF GOD  and WHY DO YOU BELIEVE WHAT YOU BELIEVE lessons ** I would like to note that due to the depth that God has taken me, I will be updating Lessons 3 & 4 of the WDYBWYB series.

WHAT IS YOUR STARTING POINT?

STEP 1 |
Take a personal survey & see where you stand
(but don't get discouraged if
you are not able to fill it out)
STEP 2 |
Take responsibility for your faith.
No one can do it for you.
You are either in or out - there is no middle line.
STEP 3 |
You MUST acknowledge that this
is NOT about spoon feeding you.
Choosing to move forward will be intensive.
You WILL have homework.
You WILL be expected to do it.
If you don't --only you suffer.
You WILL be required to
TEST EVERY SINGLE THING that I teach you.
You have to want GOD'S TRUTH
more than you want to be RIGHT.
You may have to recognize that
some of your current beliefs
may not be BIBLICAL so it is imperative
that you have a teachable heart.
STEP 4 |
Once you are ready to move forward,
take the SELF-EVALUATION SURVEY (link below)
